looking at my garbage

got really inspired over the weekend by an article on bea johnson, the author of zero waste home. thank goodness that, in spite of my blushes, i picked up martha stewart living at the library. the existence of garbage has been nagging me more loudly recently as i fill the bag (a reused kibble bag) with wrappers and as i struggle to stuff more and more plastic bags (washed and dried for reuse) into the tiny bag drawer we have in our tiny kitchen. it's just so uncomfortable.
so, i visited bea's sparse and useful blog and jotted notes from her "top ten tips." saturday was a delightful flurry of sewing linen produce and bulk bags tied up with some rough homespin. everything is better on a treadle.

and on the docket today: cancelling all fliers, catalogues, yearly phone books. liberation!
we buy all our meat and fish in bulk so i don't forsee an end to all plastic here. planning to ask bea about that though. her family of four produces a tiny bag of garbage once a year. and that is so inspiring.
